Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Nov 2, 2012) – The Sewanee men's soccer team closed out its season with a 5-0 loss against No. 2 seed Berry College, Friday, at the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Soccer Championships.
With the loss, Tigers end their season with a 4-12-3 record. Despite only four wins, Sewanee faced of number of tough opponents this year. Additionally, with only four seniors (Daniel Drewry, Joel Stewart, Samuel Edoung-Biyo, and Zack Goodwin), the young team gained valuable experience throughout the fall.
The Tigers had their best chance in the opening 10 minutes of the first half, when sophomore Weston Stitt found Goodwin alone at the back post. Unfortunaltey, Goodwin was unable to find the back of the net.
Berry then answered with goals from Caleb Lucas and Josh Hughes. A penalty kick was then awarded late in the first half which Leo Guiterrez conveted to give the Vikings a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
From there, a pair of second-half goals from David Shaw put the first-round match out of reach.
"It is disappointing to crash out early, but certainly worth the trip,"said head coach David Poggi. "After last weekend's 1-1 tie against Centre, I felt we would be in a good position to make a run no matter who we played. However, today, Berry was more than we could handle."
Despite being outshot 17-6, Sewanee did manage two more corner kicks (4-2) than Berry.
Additionally, freshman keeper Jacob Zalewski made a match-high five saves.
