BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 4, 2011) – Sometimes one day makes all the difference in the world. So was the case on Sunday as the Sewanee men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season, with an impressive 4-0 win over Blackburn College, in Birmingham, Ala.
With their triumph the Tigers evened their record to 1-1 on the season, while the Beavers fell to 0-2.
"It was a great start to our season," said head coach
David Poggi. "It is always hard to adjust to the BSC field for the first time. The size is different from ours and that makes playing there that much more difficult. It like if you were playing billiards on an six foot table and then suddenly you had to change to eight foot table. Overcoming such obstacles are only going to make us better as we move forward."
Early in the match Poggi's squad turned up the offensive pressure on Blackburn. Junior
Devon Ball got the Tigers on the board quickly as the Charleston, S.C. native posted two goals in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
After things slowed down the rest of the period, Sewanee got back on the attack midway through the second half as senior defender
Will Morgan powered home a shot from just outside the 18-yard mark to add to the Sewanee advantage.
Senior
Matt Lightfoot then closed out the Tiger total when the forward tapped home a crossing pass around the Beaver keeper.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Derek Williams and freshman keeper
Conrad Bandoroff limited the Blackburn offense scoreless, after playing a half a piece.
The Tigers will now look to continue their winning ways as they return to The Mountain for Sewanee's annual Kyle Rote Jr Invitational starting Saturday.
