Box Score: Sewanee vs. Southwestern
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2011) – Despite fighting to the very end the Sewanee men's soccer team could not overcome two first half goals as SCAC foe Southwestern outlasted the Tigers 2-1 Friday night at Puett Field.
With the loss Sewanee (5-2-1, 0-1 SCAC) ended its six match unbeaten streak, while the Pirates evened their record to 4-4-1 (1-0 SCAC).
"It's difficult to come away with a loss tonight because it was a home game and we could have gotten more from it,” said head coach
David Poggi. “Even with a slow start I never doubted we could create the chances needed to get the equalizer. I felt if we could get them into extra time it might have ended differently, but Southwestern made the most of their chances and credit to them on the night. We'll brush ourselves off and now get ready for Trinity on Sunday"
As play began Southwestern got on the board fast as forward Evan Perkins tapped home the opening goal from midfielder Tim Emma with just 46 seconds off the clock in the first half.
Despite being down quickly in the contest Sewanee answered as reining conference offensive player of the week
Matt Lightfoot tied the score at 1-1 after junior forward
Devon Ball played a beautiful ball into the box.
The score would stay knotted at one goal a piece until the Pirates Charles Schreck bent a shot from the right corner around Sewanee keeper
Conrad Bandoroff for the game-winning score in the 33
rd minute.
Overall, the Tigers led Southwestern in shots 16-13, while the Pirates held a slight edge in corner kicks 5-4. Individually, freshman midfielder
Weston Stitt led the Tigers effort with four shots, while Lightfoot and Ball each placed a team-best two attempts on-goal.
Sewanee will now look to rebound its second conference contest as the Tigers welcome Trinity to the Mountain for a 1:00 p.m. match, Sunday.
Nationally ranked No. 5 Trinity defeated SCAC rival Centre 3-0 Friday night and currently sits with a 6-0-2 record. Overall, Trinity is 21-0 all-time against Sewanee, (which dates back to 1984).
