Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2011) – After weeks of preseason practice the Sewanee men's soccer team opens its 2011 season with a 5:00 p.m. contest Friday against Mississippi College in Birmingham, Ala.
Overall, head coach David Poggi's squad boast a number of players back from last year's team. After finishing the 2010 season with a 4-11-3 record, Sewanee returns its top-two goal scorers from a season ago, in addition to sophomore goalkeeper Derrick Williams.
Offensively, the Tigers will look to senior forward Matt Lightfoot and junior David Ball to lead the way this fall. In 2010, Lightfoot boasted a team-best four goals and two assists, while Ball finished second on the team in points after posting three goals.
This preseason the Tigers have been sharp after defeating regional rival Covenant 3-1, last Saturday. In that exhibition match Sewanee junior midfielder Sam Biyo fired home the Tigers' first goal in the 13th minute, while freshman forward Weston Stitt completed the Sewanee attack with a pair of goals to close out the scoring.
Mississippi College enters the contest after dropping its only preseason match against its alumni team, 4-0. Overall, the Choctaws were picked to finish second in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) this fall.
The strength for Mississippi College should be its defense that allowed only 12 goals, while posting 12 shutouts in 2010. Individually, the Choctaws return senior forward Rafael Guzman who posted seven goals last season.
