Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2011) – After falling behind from a pair of Greensboro College first half goals the Sewanee men's soccer team rallied Sunday afternoon tying the Pride 2-2 to close out the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational.
"I was very proud of how the team responded this weekend," said head coach David Poggi. "We battled back both days against two very tough opponents. Unfortunately, its difficult to overcome slow starts and against Greensboro we couldn't find another goal to get the win."
Greensboro opened the scores as Joe Peluson and Patrick Hayes found the back of the net in the opening period.
As second half play got underway Sewanee stayed strong with its attack. Despite the early deficit junior midfielder Sam Biyo pulled the Tigers within one, as the Washington, D.C. native tapped home a nice thrown-in pass from teammate Watson Hartsoe in the 59th minute.
As play continued forward Devon Ball tied the contest at two goals apiece as the junior dribbled around the Pride defense firing home a one-time shot past the diving Greensboro keeper in the 73 minute.
Overall, the Sewanee frontline was aggressive with 20 shots and 10 corner kicks. Individually, Biyo added six attempts, while senior forward Matt Lightfoot and freshman midfielder Weston Stitt put up three.
In addition to Sunday's performances sophomore Brian Maloney, freshman Solly Thomas, Stitt and Biyo all earned all-tournament honors.
" I am happy for all four of the players who were recognized on the all-tournament team, but honestly these were team awards for a job well done," said Poggi. "Westin, Brian, Sami and Solly's play certainly had a direct effect on our results for the weekend, but it takes a team playing well together for individual performances to get recognized."
Sewanee will now look to keep its strong play up as the Tigers travel to LaGrange for a 6:00 p.m. match Saturday.
