Box Score: Sewanee vs. Huntingdon
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2011) – After a slow opening half of play the Sewanee men's soccer team railed from a one-goal deficit for a 2-1 win over Huntingdon in the opening contest of the 20
th annual Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational.
"I think Huntingdon played well today," said head coach
David Poggi. "Coach Ray has added several new players and as a group they defended courageously and created several chances on the attack. The goal they got was a little against the run of play but that happens sometimes during a match."
After neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes of play, the Hawks got on the board first as Chris Blight connected on a penalty kick in the 61
st minute.
The Tigers then responded as senior forward
Matt Lightfoot tapped home a nice pass from freshman forward
Weston Stitt, which tied the contest at 1-1 with a little under 14 minutes to play.
Two minutes later Sewanee was at it again as Stitt earned his second assist of the match with a strong pass to freshman midfielder
Nate Owens, who fired home the game-winner in the 79 minute.
"What was important was how we responded today," said Poggi. "Both of our goals came from unselfish play and individual extra effort. In games like today you have to dig a little deeper to get the result you want. Today was a team win."
With the win Sewanee moved to 2-1 on the young season, while Huntingdon fell to 0-1-1.
Individually, the Tigers were led by Lightfoot's three shots, with midfielder Sam Biyo adding two more attempts. Defensively, sophomore keeper
Derek Williams made four saves on the day.
Sewanee will now look to keep its winning ways as the Tigers face Greensboro College with a noon match Sunday to close out the Kyle Roter Invitational.
