Sewanee Routs Centre in Conference Opener

Box Score BOX SCORE

In their 2011 SCAC opener, the Sewanee Tigers scored 19 times and allowed just three goals per half to defeat the visiting Colonels of Centre 19-6 in women's lacrosse action.  Sophomore Molly Arnold (Brooklandville, Md., Bryn Mawr) scored the first four goals of the game within five minutes of the starting whistle, and Sewanee never came close to relinquishing their lead. Twelve different Tigers recorded points in the game and all non-injured players saw time on the field to make the victory an entire team effort.

Sewanee went up 7-0 to start the game with five Arnold goals and two more from junior Page Carpenter (Baltimore, Md., St. Paul's School for Girls).  Centre's high scorer, Meg Hawthorne, put the Colonels on the board 12 minutes into the game, but Sewanee dominated the scoring for the rest of the half and was up 14-3 going into halftime.  The Tigers scored another five times in the second half to come away with their third straight victory at home.  The game was called with 2:46 left to play due to inclement weather on the field.

Sewanee dominated draw controls, going 20 for 26 with senior Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay) and junior Meg Welton (Germantown, Tenn., Houston) recording five each.  A season-high 11 of Sewanee's 19 goals were assisted, and Sewanee picked up 23 groundballs to Centre's 13.  Sewanee converted 5 of 6 free position shots on the night and outshot Centre 30-24.

Welton picked up three goals, one assist, three caused turnovers, and four groundballs for the Tigers.  Carpenter notched four goals and an assist, while sophomore Olivia Vietor (Bethesda, Md., Episcopal) added two goals for Sewanee.  The Tigers stayed strong in goal the entire game with eight saves from junior Amy Nusbaum (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) and five saves from sophomore Theresa Monypeny (Memphis, Tenn., Hutchison)

"This was definitely a team effort today and a great start to the inaugural SCAC season," recapped Sewanee Head Coach Michele Dombrowski.  "By far, this was our most complete game in all aspects.  We really got back to our style and any time twelve of the 24 players that played can earn a point through either goals or assists, we have to be excited about the rest of the season.”

The Tigers are 1-0 in SCAC play and 4-4 overall.  The next game will take place in Sewanee, Tenn. versus Colorado College.  Game time is 7:00 PM CST on Thursday, March 24.
