Seven Tigers found the back of the net for Sewanee in Women's Lacrosse action, resulting in a 16-13 victory over the visiting Quakers of Guilford. Junior Meg Welton (Germantown, Tenn., Houston) put Sewanee on the board less than 30 seconds into the game off an assist by junior Mary Grace Bowring (Lexington, Va., Rockbridge County High School). Sewanee and Guilford traded back and forth goals throughout the rest of the first half and the beginning of the second half. Just three minutes into the second half, Sewanee pulled away with consecutive goals by senior Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay), senior Allison Bland (Houston, Texas, St. John's), and Welton, and never relinquished the lead.
Welton was the high scorer for Sewanee with four goals, and Bland and Grimm added three apiece. Senior Megan Velie (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's Belfield) and senior Victoria Friedman (Charlottesville, Va., Episcopal) netted two goals each, while Bowring and sophomore Olivia Vietor (Bethesda, Md., Episcopal) each recorded one goal.
Sewanee junior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) recorded a season-high 12 saves for the Tigers. Sewanee shot .516 for the match, converted on 5 of 9 free-position shots, and scored on both of their extra-man opportunities. Velie and Grimm recorded two caused turnovers for Sewanee, Welton won a team-high four draw controls, and Friedman led Sewanee with three groundballs.
“We have been doing a really good job of transitioning the ball down the field, and that possession is something we have really made a focus. It is good to come out with a two-game winning streak going into spring break,” quoted Sewanee Head Coach Michele Dombrowski.
With the win, Sewanee moves to 2-2 on the season. The Tigers will travel to Dallas, Texas for their next three games. Up first is Pomona-Pitzer at 10 A.M. on March 15th.
