Despite freezing temperatures and persistent snowfall, the Sewanee Women's Lacrosse team came away from a close game with their first win of the season. They were able to hold off a three-goal scoring streak in the latter portion of the second half by the visiting Kenyon Ladies to record a 10-9 victory.
After falling behind 0-2 early in the game, three consecutive goals by Sewanee's Molly Arnold (Brooklandville, Md., Bryn Mawr), Allison Bland (Houston, Texas, St. John's), and Page Carpenter (Baltimore, Md., St. Paul's School for Girls) put Sewanee in the lead. Kenyon's leading scorer, Alex Bair, netted the first of her three goals to tie the game, but Sewanee pulled away with goals by Megan Velie (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's Belfield), Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay), and Bland, and never relinquished the lead. With the Tigers up by a score of 9-5 at halftime, Kenyon mounted a comeback with four goals in the second half to Sewanee's one, but tight defense in the final moments of the game sealed the victory for the Tigers.
Sewanee's defense proved tough with 17 caused turnovers in the contest. The Tigers won 11 of 21 draw controls, recorded 27 shots to Kenyon's 24, and picked up 23 ground balls over the course of the game. Team leaders were senior Carly Grimm with two goals and two assists, senior Allison Bland with two goals and one assist, and junior Meg Welton (Germantown, Tenn., Houston) with two goals. Senior Megan Velie, sophomore Molly Arnold, and junior Page Carpenter added a goal apiece. Junior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) recorded 11 saves for the Tigers, and Carpenter and Grimm had three caused turnovers each. Welton was the team leader in ground balls and draw controls with five and four, respectively.
"We knew it was going to be a close game going into it, and I'm very proud of their intensity and focus for the entire game,” recapped Sewanee Head Coach Michele Dombrowski. “We executed our game plan and really fixed some issues from our first two games. They are really coming together and playing smart. Not only did we execute well on offense, but they did a great job coming up with possession either on 50-50 balls or through interceptions. Cori and Victoria had two key caused turnovers in the last few minutes that were obviously important, but the ones the team forced in the first half really set the tone for the game."
The Tigers stay at home and seek win number two with a noon contest vs. Guilford on Saturday at Puett Field.
