Sewanee pulls away late to defeat George Fox, 14-11

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sally Herrington erupted for three fourth-quarter goals as Sewanee closed on a 7-3 run in the final period to defeat George Fox, 14-11, in women's lacrosse action Tuesday night at Puett Field.

Marlin Price and Ellen Lewis paced the Tigers offensively with four points each. Price recorded three goals and an assist, while Lewis finished with four goals and three draw controls.

Defensively, Ella Townsend led the way with four caused turnovers and six ground balls, adding a draw control. Quinn Maley contributed three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Alex Kelly added a goal and an assist to go with two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Izzo Palmer chipped in two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Sewanee struck first, as Elizabeth Muller netted an unassisted goal before connecting with Lewis less than a minute later to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Following a caused turnover by Mallory Magee and a ground ball from Townsend, Kennedy Harcourt found the back of the cage to extend the lead.

George Fox responded with two late goals in the opening quarter and carried that momentum into the second, scoring three unanswered to take a 5-3 lead with 9:38 remaining in the half. Lewis halted the run with a goal, and Price tied the game at 5-5 after a caused turnover by Maley. Kelly then converted a free-position attempt to give Sewanee the lead, but the Bruins answered in the final minute of the half to send the teams into the break tied.

Lewis opened the second half with a goal off a caused turnover and ground ball by Kelly, but George Fox responded with back-to-back scores to reclaim an 8-7 edge late in the third quarter.

The Tigers took control in the fourth. Price opened the scoring in the period to tie the game before the Bruins briefly regained the lead. Katherine Clark then found Herrington in front of the cage to even the score at 9-9 with 11:14 remaining.

After a key save from Emma Steffensen and a successful clear, Kelly connected with Herrington for back-to-back goals to put Sewanee ahead for good. Price added a free-position goal, Lewis extended the lead with her fourth of the game, and Sophia Bean weaved through traffic for another score to make it 13-9.

George Fox pulled within two with a pair of quick goals, but Lewis secured the ensuing draw control, and Price assisted Herrington for the final goal with 31 seconds remaining to seal the 14-11 victory.

Sewanee outshot George Fox 36-19, including a 17-13 edge in shots on goal, and held a 25-18 advantage in ground balls.

The Tigers will host DePauw on Saturday for Senior Day before returning to conference play against Oglethorpe on Sunday.
