Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Tigers open SAA play with 16-9 win at Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Ellen Lewis recorded nine points and Marlin Price scored five goals as Sewanee's women's lacrosse team opened conference play with a 16-9 road win over Centre.

Lewis finished with a hat trick and four assists while adding three ground balls, three draw controls, and a caused turnover. Price controlled four draws to go along with her five goals. Sally Herrington contributed three goals and an assist, while Sally Whitehead added two goals in the victory.

Defensively, Kennedy Harcourt totaled three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and two draw controls, and Ella Townsend added seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Sewanee capitalized early on a two-minute man-up opportunity just over a minute into the game, as Price opened the scoring. With 11:39 remaining in the first, Helen Newcomb picked up a ground ball, leading to a connection between Lewis and Whitehead. The Tigers then broke the game open with three goals in just over a minute—coming from Sophia Bean, Herrington off a feed from Lewis, and Price—to take a 5-1 lead while limiting Centre's possession. The Colonels added a late goal to close the first quarter.

Alex Kelly opened the second period with a ground ball and a goal, and Lewis followed with a second-chance finish after collecting her own rebound to extend the lead to 7-1. A Centre turnover led to Price's third goal of the game, pushing the advantage further. Centre responded with a goal, but Alexa Berg found Lewis in the closing seconds of the half to give Sewanee a 9-2 lead at the break.

Centre opened the third quarter with two goals, but Price answered to halt the momentum. Katherine Clark then found Herrington with 3:04 remaining in the period. After two straight Centre goals, Sewanee closed the quarter strong as Clark again connected with Herrington.

Lewis assisted Elizabeth Muller to open the fourth quarter, and after a Centre response, Sewanee quickly answered as Herrington set up Lewis just 13 seconds later, following a draw control win. A Centre turnover and a Townsend ground ball led to Whitehead's second goal of the game, and Price added her fifth to extend the lead to eight. Centre scored the game's final goal with 2:19 remaining.

Sewanee returns to action Tuesday evening, hosting George Fox at 6 p.m. CT.
