In their first regular game of the season, the Sewanee Tigers came up short as the Generals from Washington and Lee recorded a 21-13 victory.
The Sewanee Tigers got on the board first with a goal in the second minute by senior Victoria Friedman. Washington and Lee answered back 19 seconds later with a goal by Wilton Megargel. Only 26 seconds went by until Sewanee's Megan Welton found the back of the net to put Sewanee up 2-1. Washington and Lee tied it up in the 25th mintute, and went on to score 8 unanswered goals to make it 10-2. Welton notched a man-down goal for the Tigers in the 12th minute, but Washington and Lee scored five more goals to put the score at 15-3. Senior Allison Bland found the back of the net with only eight seconds left in the first half to inch the Tigers closer at 15-4.
Sewanee came out of the locker room and recorded the first two points of the second half on an unassisted goal by Bland and a free position goal by Welton. Washington and Lee answered back in the twenty-third minute with an unassisted goal, but Sewanee found the net again on another free position goal by Welton and an unassisted goal by junior Page Carpenter. Washington and Lee would score three more times before Sewanee answered with a goal by Bland, assisted by Carpenter, and goals by Victoria Friedman and Shelby Koebly. Washington and Lee scored their final two goals of the night right after Sewanee's eleventh goal to put their total at 23. The Tigers put two more points on the board as Welton scored a free position goal and an unassisted goal to wrap up the game.
Junior Meg Welton recorded a team-high six goals on the night and added a team-high nine draw controls. Seniors Bland and Friedman added two apiece. Junior Page Carpenter recorded one goal and one assist, while sophomore Molly Arnold and freshman Shelby Koebley added one goal apiece.
Sophomore goalie Theresa Monypeny recorded seven saves, while junior Amy Nusbaum recorded two saves. Molly Arnold paced the Tigers in caused turnovers with two, while Friedman recorded a team-high three groundballs.
“It was a good opening game in terms of seeing where we are, and now we recognize the importance of playing a full 60 minutes,” quoted Head Coach Michele Dombrowski. I think we made some good adjustments in the second half which will help us throughout the rest of the season.”
Sewanee's record stands at 0-1, and the Tigers' next game will be played against Redlands University on March 5th in Sewanee, Tenn. Game time is 12:00 CST.
