Austin College earns 1-0 double overtime win over Sewanee

SHERMAN, Texas (Oct. 9, 2011)It took over 104 minutes of play to decide the outcome, however SCAC opponent and host Austin College outlasted Sewanee 1-0 Sunday in a dramatic double overtime win at the Austin Soccer Complex in Sherman, Texas.

With the loss Sewanee now sits at 6-4-1 overall with a 1-3 mark in conference play.

"Today we tried some different combinations to get more movement from us in attack and take advantage of some of Austin Colleges tendencies," said head coach David Poggi. "In some ways it worked very well, but to expect to get it perfect is unrealistic. I am pleased with how we tried to execute our game plan. “

After neither team found the back of the net throughout regulation and the first overtime period, both teams headed to the locker room before the start of the second overtime frame, due to a lightning delay.

"We started very sharp and created several early chances, but at times struggled with the pressure,” said Poggi. "In the first 30 minutes Sami, Griffin and Weston all had chances near the six-yard box, but were unable to find the back of the net.”

With the 30 minute delay over Austin defender Mason Waddell kicked a long pass down the sideline to teammate Chris Melton. Melton then dribbled a couple of yards before lobbing a shot over the outstretched arms of Sewanee goalkeeper Conrad Bandoroff for the game-winning goal.

"Austin College worked extremely hard and put pressure on us all over the field,” said Poggi. "It was a physical game and several players seemed to have difficulty with their footing due to the rain, but the weather conditions were the same for both teams. When you win a game like today you get an idea of what post season play is like and how you must battle to get there". "When you lose it makes you want to win even more".

The Kangaroos outshot the Tigers 19-15, with Bandoroff and Austin keeper Grant Gosselin each stopping four attempts.

Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. match Friday October 14 against conference rival Centre College.

"The sudden death goal was well taken,” according to Poggi. “If he had tried anything else Conrad would have handled it. Tomorrow is another day so now we need to change our attention to Centre College and Friday night's contest.”
