Box Score: Sewanee vs. Trinity
SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2011) – A late first half goal proved to be the difference as the Sewanee men's soccer team fell to No. 5 ranked Trinity 1-0 Sunday at Puett Field.
With the loss Sewanee drops to 5-3-1 overall and now sits with a 0-2 conference mark. Trinity improved to 7-0-2 this season, while earning its second straight league victory.
“Trinity is a dangerous team, they have so many weapons so I was very pleased with the effort and execution defensively today,” said head coach
David Poggi. “I think we can take several things from this performance even in the loss. They scored a great goal which left us wondering at the end of the first half but then show great character in how we responded.”
After both teams battled each other for the majority of the first half Trinity would go on the attack with under a minute to play. As time ticked down in the opening frame forward Andrew Soares served a strong pass to teammate Josh Adams, who was waiting at the back post. Adams then tapped home the game-winner past Sewanee keeper
Derek Williams with six seconds left to play in the opening half.
Overall, Trinity outshot Sewanee 16-5, while leading in corner kicks 7-0. Despite the loss Sewanee played tough throughout the match. Leading the way was freshman forward
Weston Stitt, who led the Tiger attack with two shots, while junior Sam Biyo added one shot that sailed just high of the goal in the first half. Senior forward
Matt Lightfoot and
Will Morgan also had one shot each during the match.
“In the last 15 minutes we made a push to get the equalizer and I felt we were one touch or pass away from making that happen,” Poggi said. “Today we walked off the field disappointed in the result, but a little more confident in what we can achieve this season.”
Sewanee returns to action with a 4:00 p.m. match at the University of the Dallas next Friday.
