Despite a late second half goal Sewanee falls at Berry 3-2 in overtime

Box Score Box Score: Sewanee at Berry

ROME, Ga. (Oct. 16, 2011)
After sending the match into overtime with only 26 seconds to play in regulation the Sewanee men's soccer team could not hold off host Berry in the extra period as the Tigers fell 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Ford Field.

With the loss Sewanee now sits at 6-5-2 on the year, while the Vikings improved to 3-6-2 mark.

"I can think of a few coaching clichés that are appropriate for our result today with Berry College, however it was obvious midterms, Friday nights match and Fall Break didn't help matters,” said head coach David Poggi. "We have been focused on making this years SCAC Tournament and todays result and opponent does not factor into achieving that goal.”

Berry quickly jumped out to a early 1-0 lead after Steven Weeks found the back of the net from David Shaw with only two minutes off the clock.

Fortunately, for Sewanee, the Tigers didn't panic as senior midfielder Stuart Maxey tied the contest in the 17th minute. On the play, Maxey tapped home a pass from junior Zach Goodwin, after the Sewanee frontline took Berry goalkeeper Andrew Ryndak out of position with their initial attack.

With the score tied at 1-1 at the half, Berry again came out of the locker room with some intensity. With just 22 seconds off the clock – in the second half - Ryndak boomed a free kick to midfielder Zak Wallingford, who then outraced the Sewanee defense for his third goal of the season.

Just when it looked like Berry would run out the clock the remainder of the match, Sewanee showed its character. With the clock ticking down inside a minute to play senior forward Matt Lightfoot found senior forward Jeremy Abney off a Tiger free kick for the equalizing goal in regulation.

Unfortunately, Berry stayed at it in the extra frame as forward David Shaw converted the game-winner from teammate Christian Fullbright.

Overall, the Vikings outshot Sewanee 26-9, while leading in corner kicks by a 8-2 mark. Despite the offensive assault by Berry, Sewanee freshman Conrad Bandoroff played well with eight saves on the day.

"We are learning to overcome obstacles and having to play our last three games with extra time will make us stronger going into Millsaps, Rhodes, Birmingham Southern and Oglethorpe,” said Poggi. "Now we will take a little break (Monday and Tuesday) to recover so we can make a run to finish in the top six teams and qualify for post season play.”

Sewanee will now return to SCAC play as league rival Millsaps comes to the Mountain for a 7:00 p.m. match Friday night at Puett Field.
