Tigers Fall to Union in Season Opener

Box Score Sutton Shults paced Union University (Tenn.) with two goals Wednesday night as the Bulldogs defeated the Sewanee Tigers 4-0 in men's soccer action in Sewanee.

Shults and the Bulldogs were simply too much for the Tigers to handle as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half and added one goal in the second half to secure the win. Head Coach David Poggi commented on the more experienced Bulldog squad: "They were much more together than we were. Technically, they've had more time together as a squad to grow and learn how to play with one another. We were more concerned about stopping their stuff than we were about playing our own game. In the end, our inexperience got the best of us."

Shults opened up the Union scoring attack quickly, with a header to the middle of the net that soared just out of Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps reach in the fifth minute. Brian Castro followed up Shults' goal with one of his own when he scored unassisted in the eighteenth minute. Diego Santos added the third goal of the first half for the Bulldogs when he placed a shot in the top middle of the net to score during the twenty-fourth minute.

The Tigers came out aggressively in the second half but weren't able to capitalize before the Bulldogs scored for the fourth and final time with 38:09 left in the second half. Shults scored his second goal of the night on a cross into the right side of the net to put Sewanee away for the evening.

Despite their size and experience disadvantages, the Tigers gained valuable experience as a team. "I'm very proud of the guys. It's early in the season and we got some good experience tonight that we can grow on. Adversity helps us grow as a team and will only benefit us later on," explained Poggi.

The Tigers finished the evening with ten shots on goal and Delchamps collected three saves for Sewanee. The Tigers open up the season at 0-1 but will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Fontbonne University at 5:00 p.m. on September 4th.
