SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved its
record to 11-3 Friday night with a 27-19 win over
Birmingham-Southern after getting out to an early 6-0 lead. The
Tigers led the Panthers of 'Southern 12-7 at the half. Eighteen of
Sewanee's 27 goals were assisted and Meg Welton
(Germantown, Tenn., Houston) led the Tiger charge with a 100%
shooting percentage for seven goals on seven shots. She also won 12
draw controls and caused four turnovers. Welton has 46 goals so far
this year.
Senior Steffi Renninger (Darnestown, Md., Sidwell
Friends) also contributed four goals for Sewanee and had four
assists. Amy Nusbaum (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) and
Theresa Monypeny (Memphis, Tenn., Hutchinson) split time
in goal in the Sewanee win. Stephanie Gove and Lindsay Griffin led
the Panthers with five goals apiece and Katie Bates took the loss
in goal.
Both teams had 38 shots in the game and Sewanee had a .710
shooting percentage. Sewanee had 20 ground balls compared to 18 for
the Panthers. Each team had 24 draw controls.
Sewanee is now 11-3 and will host LaGrange and Dallas next
weekend. Birmingham-Southern falls to 10-3 with the loss.
