The Sewanee men's soccer team wrapped up the 2010 season this afternoon with a 3-2 loss at Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers went up 3-1 early in the second half and the Tigers could never overcome the deficit, falling 3-2 and finishing the season with a 4-11-3 overall record and a 2-5-2 record in SCAC play. Birmingham-Southern moves to 5-8-4 on the season and 2-6-3 in conference action.
Birmingham-Southern's Sean Head got the scoring started in the fourth minute, when he took a pass from Brynjar Arnason and connected with the net. Head's shot soared over Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps head to give the host Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Sewanee evened the score, though, in the 23rd minute. Matt Lightfoot found the net on an unassisted goal. Lightfoot sent a header to the net that Panther goalkeeper Shachar Hovan rebounded right back to him. Lightfoot connected on the rebound and tallied the equalizer, making it 1-1 halfway through the first period.
Birmingham-Southern picked up one more goal before the end of the half, as Arnason got a goal of his own at the 33:52 mark. Arnason's goal, which was assisted by Andrew Stein, put the Panthers ahead 2-1, a lead they would hold onto for the rest of the half.
The Panthers picked up their third goal early in the second period. Jarred Brookins tallied a score for the hosts when he scored at the 53:35 mark off an assist by Head. Brookins' goal gave Birmingham-Southern a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers would get one more goal, but it wouldn't be enough. Sewanee's Will Morgan scored in the 63rd minute, off a pass from Watson Hartsoe, but the Tigers couldn't overcome the Panther lead. Birmingham-Southern held on until the end and went home with the 3-2 victory.
Birmingham-Southern controlled the shot count, tallying 21 shots, while the Tigers took just ten. Sewanee led in corner kicks, though, seven to five. Delchamps recorded 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves for the Tigers. Hovan tallied five saves for the hosts.
The loss wraps up Sewanee's 2010 season. The Tigers will lose one senior this year, Matt Engle.
