Field hockey's comeback effort not enough in SCAC Tournament

Box Score BOX SCORE

The Sewanee Tigers took a 3-1 lead early in the second half after being down 1-0 at halftime, but it wasn't enough, as the Hendrix Warriors mounted a furious rally to force overtime and eventually top fourth-seeded Sewanee 4-3 in the first round of the SCAC Field Hockey Championships. The Tigers wrap up the 2010 regular season with a 5-12 overall record and a 1-7 record in the SCAC.

Fifth-seeded Hendrix jumped out to an early lead on a damp and cold day in Greencastle, Indiana, where DePauw University is playing host to the Championships. Kelly Rappe got the Warriors on the board first, just a little over five minutes into the contest, when she put a shot past Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md., St. James) into the net for the 1-0 lead. The Tigers and the Warriors battled it out for the rest of the half, as both defenses stepped up. After the initial goal, Sewanee only allowed Hendrix to take one additional shot in the half. The Tigers took six shots in the half, while the Warriors tallied five. Hendrix headed into halftime clinging to the one goal lead.

While the first half proved to be a defensive struggle, the offenses came to play in the second half. Sewanee sophomore Anne Booke (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Latin) provided the spark for the Tiger effort when, just five minutes into the second half, she took a pass off a penalty corner from senior Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay) and connected with the net, tying the contest at one-apiece.

Sewanee senior Caroline Carlin (Gladwyne, Penn., Country Day) broke the tie just three minutes later when she put an unassisted shot past Hendrix keeper Alyssa Havens for the 2-1 Sewanee lead. Booke added to the lead slightly four minutes after Carlin's score. Booke found the goal again on a penalty corner, giving the Tigers the 3-1 lead just thirteen minutes into the second period.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the effort wouldn't be enough. Hendrix knocked in two straight goals to even things after Booke's second score. The Warriors made it 3-2 with a goal by Heather Newell at the 53:41 mark. Newell scored again, this time on a pass from Maggie DesPain at the 60:11 mark, to tie things up at three-all with just ten minutes left in the contest. Neither team could break the deadlock before time expired in regulation, and the first match of the 2010 SCAC Field Hockey Championships was forced into overtime.

The Tigers just couldn't muster a game-winner in the overtime period. Rappe, the Hendrix player who started things off five minutes into the contest, finished things up for the Warriors at the 79:03 mark in the overtime period. Rappe put an unassisted shot Morrow and into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 4-3 victory over Sewanee.

The two squads played an even game throughout. Hendrix led in shots, 15 to 14, while Sewanee led in penalty corners, 12 to 11. Morrow and Havens both tallied eight saves in 79 minutes and three seconds of work in the goal.

The loss wraps up the Sewanee regular season. The Tigers will lose four seniors in 2010: Grimm, Carlin, Taylor Skeen (Baltimore, Md., Towson), and Emily Detmer (Denver, Colo., Pomfret).
