The Sewanee women's soccer team topped the Millsaps Majors 2-1 in Jackson, Mississippi this evening. Tiger sophomore Bess Goodman continued to provide a crucial offensive spark for the team, tallying two goals in the win tonight and extending her season total to eleven goals. Sewanee moves to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in SCAC play with just one regular season contest left. Millsaps falls 7-11 on the year and 0-8 in conference action.
Defense ruled the first half, as the Tigers and the Majors battled through the entire period with no offensive results. Sewanee took only five shots in the first half but managed to hold Millsaps to just two and the two squads headed into halftime tied at zero.
Sewanee turned up the offensive output in the second half, though, as the Tigers poured on eleven shots in the period while holding the Majors to just three. It didn't take long for Goodman to find the net and put the Tigers on the board coming out of halftime. Just two minutes and one second into the period, Goodman ripped an unassisted shot past Millsaps' goalkeeper Molly Beth Jourdan to put Sewanee ahead 1-0 early in the second.
The Majors didn't let the Tigers' one goal lead stand for long. Just fifteen minutes later, Millsaps netted the equalizer when Grace Gremillion slipped a shot past Sewanee keeper Virginia Zakas. Germillion's goal tied things up 1-1 with nearly 28 minutes left in the contest.
Sewanee didn't let the Majors enjoy the tie for too long and Goodman wasn't finished for the night. Just five minutes after Germillion tied it up, Goodman connected on a pass from Layne Ezzell and tallied the game-winner, putting the Tigers ahead 2-1. Sewanee would preserve the lead for the rest of the match and walked away with the 2-1 victory.
The Tigers finished the night with the edge in shots, 11 to five, and corner kicks, seven to one. Zakas came up with two saves in 90 minutes of goalkeeper action, while Jourdan tallied eight saves for the Majors.
Sewanee will be back in action Sunday at Birmingham-Southern College. The Tigers will square off with the Panthers at noon in their final regular season contest of the year. The Panthers are 10-6 overall after a 1-0 victory over Oglethorpe this evening.
