Senior Tiki Slay (Greenville, Miss., St. Joseph) got the Tigers on the board just thirteen minutes into the contest as Sewanee cruised past Oglethorpe, 5-1, in SCAC action today. Five Tigers found the scoring column as Sewanee moved to 6-5 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
Sewanee dominated for the entire game, taking 21 shots to the Stormy Petrels seven. Slay found the net at the 32:07 mark when junior Faith Spencer (New York, N.Y., Hotchkiss) set her up just in front of the Oglethorpe net. Slay was able to convert, putting her shot past Oglethorpe goalkeeper Sarah Nania and making it 1-0 in favor of the Tigers.
Both teams were relatively quiet for the rest of the first half, but Sewanee was able to find the net again before halftime. Freshman Ellie Quinn (New Orleans, La., Academy of the Sacred Heart) took a pass from fellow freshman Jessica Keefe (Keller, Texas, Central) and put it in the net with just nine minutes left in the half. Quinn's goal put the Tigers up 2-0 heading into the half.
The second half belonged to the Tigers. Sophomore Bess Goodman (Greensboro, N.C., Grimsley), the reigning SCAC offensive player of the week, scored her fifth goal of the week when she put one between the posts and into the net at the 34:54 mark. Spencer picked up her second assist of the day with Goodman's goal, as Sewanee pushed ahead 3-0.
Oglethorpe picked up their only goal of the day just six minutes after Goodman's score. Stormy Petrel Clara St. Urbain picked up the visitors only score of the day when she when put one past Sewanee keeper Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster) at the 28:44 mark. St. Urbain's goal would be the only Oglethorpe bright spot for the rest of the afternoon.
After the Oglethorpe goal made it 3-1, the Tigers added a few insurance goals to close out the contest. With twelve minutes left in the contest, senior Kate Willingham (Atlanta, Ga., Marist) and a host of Sewanee players crowded the Oglethorpe net. As several Tigers lunged at the ball, Willingham's header connected, making it 4-1 in favor of the hosts. Goodman earned the assist on Willingham's goal.
But the Tigers weren't finished yet. With just seven minutes left in the match, Sewanee earned a penalty kick. Junior Lizzie Butler (Carrabelle, Fla., Wakulla High School) took the shot and converted, sending a beautiful strike past Nania for the score. Butler's penalty kick made it 5-1 Sewanee, which would last through the last seven minutes to be the final score.
The Tigers led in shots, 21 to seven, and also held the advantage in corner kicks, eight to two. Zakas tallied four saves for Sewanee, while Nania recorded ten saves for the visitors.
Sewanee will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to take on Covenant College in a 5:00 p.m. match up. The Stormy Petrels fall to 7-4-1 on the year and 0-4 in SCAC play.
