Tigers tally conference win against Pirates

Box Score

The Sewanee women's soccer team bounced back from their loss to \#7 Trinity on Friday night in a big way, topping the Southwestern Pirates 2-1 in Georgetown, Texas this afternoon. The Tigers struck first on their way to the win and moved to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in SCAC play. Southwestern dropped to 8-7-1 on the year and also sit at 4-4 in conference play.

The Tigers and the Pirates battled through a defensive deadlock for most of the first half. Sewanee managed only four shots in the period but held Southwestern to just two. Sewanee junior Faith Spencer managed to break the hold nearly halfway through the period. Spencer, who's been an offensive spark for the Tigers all season long, connected with a pass from senior Tiki Slay and sailed the ball past Southwestern goalkeeper Sarah Nonaka for the 1-0 margin. Both teams remained quiet throughout the rest of the period and the Tigers headed into the locker room clinging to the one point lead.

Both teams came out shooting slightly more in the second period, as Sewanee more than doubled their output with nine shots, while the hosts took six. The Tigers battled through nearly sixteen minutes of second half play still clinging to a one goal lead before the Pirates managed to even things up. Southwestern's Amy Douglas tallied the equalizer at the 61:06 mark, taking a pass from Lindsay Jakszta on a free kick and connecting with the net, making it one-all with 29 minutes left to play.

The two teams played tied soccer for nearly twelve minutes before Sewanee's Kabler Colhoun broke the tie. Colhoun scored the game-winner at the 73 minute mark when she scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 Sewanee. Colhoun's shot bounced around in the box before finding its way past Nonaka and into the goal for the winning score.

Sewanee finished the day with the thirteen to eight edge in shots, while Southwestern led in corner kicks, eight to three. Virginia Zakas picked up four saves and the win for the Tigers after recording 90 minutes in goal.

Sewanee will finish out the regular season this weekend with two SCAC match ups. The Tigers will head to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Millsaps College on Friday evening and will face Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday afternoon.
