The Sewanee men's soccer team hung with Colorado College for 90 minutes of play today, but two second half goals gave the Colorado Tigers one for the win column. Despite a spirited performance from the home team, Sewanee just wasn't able to capitalize, as the Colorado defense came alive for the shutout.
The two teams battled back and forth all afternoon, as play consistently shifted from one end of the field to the other. While both Tiger teams made several offensive attacks throughout the first half, both defenses held strong and wouldn't allow a goal. Sewanee nearly reached the scoreboard at the 28-minute mark when sophomore Devon Ball (Charleston, S.C., Porter-Gaud) hit a powerful shot at the goal that slammed off the left post. Ball's shot was the closest both teams would come to capitalizing on a shot in the first half, as both teams headed into halftime with zeroes on the board.
The second half looked much like the first, as both teams came out strong and continued to battle. Colorado found some luck just seven minutes into the half though. After a Sewanee foul, Colorado's Matt Fechter took a shot at goal that just slipped past the outstretched hands of Sewanee goalkeeper Derek Williams (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel High School), making it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
After the goal, Sewanee kept the defensive pressure on the Colorado, but the visiting Tigers were able to force several offensive attempts, tallying eleven shots in the second period after being held to just four in the first. Colorado also earned eight corner kicks, against just one for Sewanee, including five in the second half. After two straight corner kicks in the 73rd and 75th minutes, Colorado's Sean Parham sent one into the net. After a throw in by the visiting Tigers, the ball was bobbled around by several players before Brandon Ogilvie took control and passed it Parham, who sent it past Williams, putting Colorado ahead 2-0 at the 76:47 mark.
Sewanee was able to keep the intensity up for the last thirteen minutes and create two attempts at scoring, one a shot by Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Houston High School) and one a shot by Ball, but neither got past Colorado keeper Andy McGhie. The 2-0 score would stand through the final buzzer, as Sewanee dropped to 2-6-2 on the season and 0-2-2 in SCAC play.
The home Tigers ended the contest with thirteen shots, while Colorado recorded fifteen. Williams came up with five saves in 90 minutes of action, while McGhie tallied four for Colorado.
Sewanee will host Oglethorpe in an SCAC match-up next Saturday, October 9th at 3:00 p.m. The Stormy Petrels are 5-3-1 overall and 1-3 in SCAC play after a 3-0 win over Austin College this afternoon.
