SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Grayson White netted a pair of goals in less than a minute, the second one on a penalty kick, and Sewanee dominated the second half in a 4-0 victory over 18
th-ranked Johns Hopkins in men's soccer action here Saturday afternoon at Puett Field.
The Tigers (1-0-1) controlled possession and created a host of scoring chances in the first half but neither team could find the back of the net.
Isaac Rasheed missed a chance in the 50
th minute off a free kick, with his shot just missing to the right. Then in the 58
th minute,
Tyler Scott's header found the back of the net but he was called offsides.
The Tigers finally converted in the 60
th minute, with
Alpha Bah's cross from the right finding Scott, who slotted a shot to the far post for a 1-0 edge.
Sewanee took advantage of a Johns Hopkins mistake in the 69
th minute, with a bad pass from the goalkeeper cut off by
Wells Durham, who passed to White in front of the net for a goal. Just 36 seconds later, Thomas Bean was called for a foul in the box and White converted the PK, extending the lead to 3-0.
Another Blue Jays mistake led to the final goal for the Tigers, with
Nathan Vanhoeve's long goal kick bouncing off a Johns Hopkins defender and onto a running Rasheed, who buried the shot low and right for the final goal.
Vanhoeve then made the best save of the match in the 79
th minute on a blast from Johns Hopkins' Scotty Coleman from just inside the box, a reaction save with his left hand to knock it away and keep the clean sheet. Vanhoeve made five saves and faced 12 total shots while Sewanee collected 22 shots, 10 of them on net.
The Tigers held the run of play for much of the first half, threatening early with an Rasheed blast from the right save saved by Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Ryan Aiken in the sixth minute and then again in the 25
th minute. Neither team could muster good scoring chances until late in the period when Sewanee put together a flurry in the final seven minutes but was unable to find the back of the net.
Stokes McConnell's cross just missed a Sewanee player at the top of the six-yard box and
Sam McMurry's shot at the back post was saved. Bah then took a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box in the 37
th minute and
Brady Lloyd's long drive from 35 yards sailed just over the crossbar two minutes later.
The Blue Jays put together their best offensive threat in the last two minutes of the period but were unable to get a shot on goal and only one total shot despite almost 90 seconds of possession and one corner kick deep in the offensive zone, sending the match to intermission with no score.
Sewanee hosts Berea College this Wednesday at 6 p.m. and takes on Southern Virginia next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Puett Field.
