SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Alpha Bah scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes and Sewanee dominated the run of play from start-to-finish, adding two more goals in a 4-0 victory over Berea College in men's soccer action here Wednesday night at Puett Field.
In the process the Tigers (2-0-1) upped their scoreless streak to 270 minutes, failing to allow a goal in all three matches so far this season. Berea (0-3-0) posted eight total shots and only three on goal against Sewanee goalkeeper
Nathan Vanhoeve.
The Tigers started fast, with Bah picking up a loose ball in the box after Berea goalkeeper Eris Acosta came out of the goal on a bad touch by another Sewanee player. Bah picked up the loose ball and fired into an open net, far post, for a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest.
Bah scored again less than a minute later after being tackled in the box. He converted the penalty kick 49 seconds after the first goal for a 2-0 edge.
Sewanee continued to push forward, with a header by
Tyler Scott off a corner kick saved by Acosta and another chance by Scott sailing over the net.
The Tigers found the back of the net again in the 41
st minute after a free kick near midfield from a yellow card on the Mountaineers.
Stokes McConnell's cross was knocked away by Acosta but bounced right to
Domenic Desmond near the top of the box. Desmond sailed his shot by the keeper for a 3-0 advantage at intermission.
The teams played more up-and-down in the second half, with the play end-to-end, though Sewanee held an 11-3 advantage in shots. The Tigers netted the final score in the last minute of play, with
Austin Miller's pass finding
Luke Manley, who beat Acosta to the ball near the top of the box. He slid the ball past the charging keeper and into the net.
Acosta finished with nine saves and faced 27 total shots in the match.
Sewanee continues its seven-match homestand this Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Southern Virginia and hosts Maryville College next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
