BOX SCORE

A rebound shot by junior Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Houston High School) found the net and tied things up late in the second half. But the Sewanee Tigers and the Hendrix Warriors held on throughout two overtimes to finish in a 2-2 tie in men's soccer action in Sewanee this afternoon. Sewanee moves to 3-8-3 overall and (1-2-3) in SCAC play. Hendrix moves to 5-7-1 on the year and 1-5-1 in conference action.

Play moved back and forth between both halves of the field throughout the first half. The Warriors got on the board first when Connor Silvestri took a pass from Kevin Gregory for the score. Silvestri's goal came at the 28:21 mark to put Hendrix ahead 1-0.

Nearly eight minutes later, the Tigers earned a goal of their own to even things up. Sewanee junior Mark Meyer (Roanoke, Va., North Cross School) took a pass from Lightfoot and put a diving header past Hendrix goalkeeper Adam Legg. Despite some strong protest from the Hendrix bench, Meyer's goal stood and the Tigers and the Warriors headed into the locker room tied at one apiece.

Both teams were unable to find the net for much of the second half, despite some very physical play from both squads. Silvestri broke the silence though, when he found the net at the 12:11 mark. Silvestri's goal, off a pass from Colin Thompson, gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

The lead proved to be short-lived. Just six minutes later, Lightfoot evened things up. After shots by Brian Maloney (Ft. Worth, Texas, Aledo High School) and Alec Peter (Denver, Col., Kent Denver School) got deflected. Lightfoot connected and slipped the ball past Legg for the score. His goal made it two-all with just 6:10 to play.

The action heated up in the last three minutes, as both teams battled for the win. Sewanee had several opportunities, but couldn't capitalize. Several cards were handed out in the last two minutes, and a Hendrix player and the head coach were both ejected. The Warriors were forced to play the rest of the game down a man, but neither team could score and the game headed into overtime.

The physical play continued into two overtimes, but no one managed to find the net.
Despite back and forth play and several chances by both teams, neither team could break the deadlock and the two teams played to a double overtime 2-2 tie.

In the wild, back and forth game, the two teams finished even in shots, with 14 apiece. Hendrix held the edge in corners, ten to five. Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps came up six saves, while Legg tallied five for the visitors. The two teams combined for 30 fouls and nine cards, of which 20 fouls and three cards belonged to the Tigers.

Sewanee returns to action on Friday when they head to San Antonio, Texas to take on the Tigers of Trinity University in an SCAC clash. Trinity is 14-2 on the year and 7-0 in conference play.
