The Sewanee volleyball team dropped two matches to two nationally ranked teams yesterday at the SCAC East/West Crossover. The Tigers fell to \#20 Southwestern in three sets, 5-25, 13-25, 9-25, before falling to \#11 Colorado College, 3-0 (14-25, 16-25, 14-25).
In the Southwestern match, Erin Brahm (Huntsville, Ala., Grissom) led the Tigers with seven assists, while Liz Boddiford (Forest Hill, Md., Maryvale Prep) tallied four kills. Adrienne Borchardt (New Orleans, La., Ben Franklin) contributed five digs and Brahm and Kim Conkell (Atlanta, Ga, Lakeside) each picked up an ace.
In their second match of the day, Boddiford picked up eight kills in the loss to Colorado. Brahm added ten assists and two blocks. Borchardt came up with nine digs and Brahm, Callie Sims (Asheville, N.C., Carolina Day School), and Tarver Shimek (Towson, Md., Towson) each recorded one ace.
Head Coach Jessica Cortese was pleased with the Tigers ability to hang with two nationally ranked teams: “For the last few weeks we have made defense our primary focus during training. The first match we struggled on defense, but were able to rally back during the second match and dug the ball 31 more times than in the first match. Playing that level of defense against a team ranked in the top 15 is commendable, and we are hoping to build on that for tomorrow.”
The Tigers face off against Trinity University and Centre College today at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Sewanee falls to 1-23 on the year and 0-10 in SCAC play.
