Sewanee sweeps Saturday double header

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Suna Merkler and Savannah Gann each tallied 20 kills as the Sewanee volleyball team swept its Saturday doubleheader at the Hermann Athletic Center, earning straight-set victories over Guilford and William Peace to conclude the Raleigh Invitational. 

In the opener, the Tigers rolled past Guilford, 25-18, 25-13, 25-14. Anna Ellison led the way with 10 kills on a .421 hitting percentage and added seven total blocks, while Savannah Gann and Suna Merkler each tallied 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Gann added four service aces and 13 digs, and Merkler contributed six digs and two aces. Maria Kennedy posted five kills and 10 digs, and Elena Sipe added two kills and a block. Setters Estela Gonzalez and Jordan Krise combined for 33 assists, and Sophia Caruso anchored the back row with 18 digs.

Sewanee controlled the first set from the start, building separation before closing out a 25-18 win. The Tigers surged in the second frame, hitting .375 with only three errors while holding Guilford to .097, cruising to a 25-13 victory. Sewanee maintained its momentum in the third, capitalizing on Guilford's offensive struggles to secure a 25-14 win and complete the sweep.

The Tigers carried that momentum into the afternoon match, sweeping William Peace, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17, to finish the day unbeaten. Gann again led the offense with 10 kills, 13 digs, and three service aces, while Merkler added nine kills and two digs. Kennedy delivered eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage, and Ellison contributed six kills and a block assist. Sipe added three kills, two aces, and four total blocks. Gonzalez and Krise combined for 35 assists, with Gonzalez tallying 23 and Krise adding 12. Caruso once again anchored the defense, finishing with 21 digs.

Sewanee controlled the opening set, hitting .333 and limiting William Peace to just eight kills while forcing seven errors. The Tigers built an early lead and maintained it throughout, closing out the frame 25-16. In the second set, the Pacers tied the score three times, but the Tigers' offense responded with 17 kills to secure a 25-21 win. Sewanee finished the match with another steady performance in the third, capitalizing with timely kills from Gann, Merkler, and Kennedy to pull away for a 25-17 victory and complete the sweep.

Sewanee returns to action next weekend as they head to Centre to open conference play on Saturday morning before facing Berea College in the afternoon.
