Tigers battle in pair of four-set losses on final day of Sewanee Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday in Juhan Gymnasium, falling to North Park in four sets before suffering another four-set loss to RV Transylvania to close out the weekend.

In the opener, the Tigers battled North Park through four competitive sets before falling, 20-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-22. Savannah Gann and Suna Merkler led the Sewanee attack with eight kills apiece, while Anna Ellison added seven kills and four block assists. Elena Sipe also recorded seven kills, two blocks, and two service aces.

Estela Gonzalez directed the offense with 14 assists, while Jordan Krise also posted 14 assists and added a service ace. Sophia Caruso led the Tigers defensively with nine digs, while Sydney Thaxton added nine digs and three service aces.

Sewanee opened the match with a strong first set, using a balanced offensive attack to take a 25-20 victory. North Park answered in the second, however, edging the Tigers in a back-and-forth frame, 28-26. The Vikings then took the third set, 25-22, before closing out the match with another 25-22 victory in the fourth. 

The Tigers returned to the court in the afternoon against Transylvania, falling to the Pioneers, 25-22, 27-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Gann paced the Sewanee offense with 11 kills on a .409 hitting percentage in just three sets, while Merkler, Ellison, and Beatrice Wiggins each contributed six kills. Jane McAuley added five kills and two service aces, while Maria Kennedy chipped in three kills and two block assists.

Krise directed the attack with 21 assists and added three service aces, while Caruso anchored the back row with 12 digs. Gann added two digs, while Baldwin contributed seven digs in the defensive effort.

Sewanee opened the match by taking an early lead in the first set, but Transylvania rallied to claim the opening frame, 25-22. The Tigers fought back in the second set, pushing the Pioneers to extra points before Transylvania ultimately prevailed, 27-25.

Transylvania carried the momentum into the third set, taking a 25-19 win, and completed the sweep of the final two sets with a 25-18 victory.

The Tigers return to action next weekend, heading to Meredith College for the Raleigh Invitational, facing the Avenging Angels on Friday before taking on Guilford and William Peace on Saturday.
