Tigers drop five-set battle at Meredith

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Suna Merkler posted 16 kills, and Sewanee rallied from an early deficit to force a fifth set, but the Tigers fell to Meredith on Friday afternoon at Weatherspoon Gymnasium, 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-12, 12-15.

Merkler led the offense with 16 kills on .279 hitting, adding five digs and three total blocks. Maria Kennedy tallied 11 kills on a .280 clip, while Anna Ellison delivered one of the most efficient performances of the day with nine kills on .529 hitting and two blocks. Savannah Gann added nine kills, 11 digs, and an ace, and setters Estela Gonzalez and Jordan Krise combined for 43 assists. Defensively, Sophia Caruso anchored the back row with a match-high 34 digs.

Meredith opened the match strong, edging Sewanee 25-23 in a tightly contested first set that featured six ties and four lead changes. The Tigers hit .281 in the frame and trailed by just one late, but the Avenging Angels closed out the final two points to take the early advantage.

In the second set, Meredith maintained control behind .286 hitting, pulling away for a 25-18 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Sewanee's offense cooled, recording 13 kills but committing seven errors.

The Tigers responded in the third, flipping the momentum behind improved efficiency and balanced scoring. Sewanee hit .273 in the frame, with Merkler, Kennedy, and Ellison powering a 14-kill effort. A late push allowed the Tigers to secure the 25-20 victory and extend the match.

Sewanee dominated the fourth set from start to finish, producing its best offensive performance of the day. The Tigers hit .429 with only two errors. Ellison and Merkler led the charge as Sewanee cruised to a 25-12 win to force a decisive fifth set.

The final frame was tight early, with both teams trading points and battling through three ties. Meredith's offense proved efficient down the stretch, hitting .381 in the set. Sewanee stayed within striking distance at 12-13, but the Angels closed out the final two points to secure the 15-12 win and remain undefeated on the season.

Sewanee finished the match with 59 kills on .258 hitting, 72 digs, and 55 assists in a competitive, five-set battle.

The Tigers will face Guilford and William Peace on September 12 to close out the Raleigh Invitational at William Peace.
