GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sewanee and Guilford played three quarters of even lacrosse on Thursday before Guilford outscored the Tigers 5-2 in the final quarter for the 10-7 win. Sewanee's big three-goal first period set up the 5-5 tie after three.
Neat Clark (Houston, Texas, Houston Episcopal School) and Hank Gerrity (Cumberland, Maine, North Yarmouth Academy) led Sewanee with two goals apiece. Stewart Calder (New Canaan, Conn., New Canaan HS) had 16 saves in goal for Sewanee. Chris Ashcraft led Guilford with four goals and Mark Guillen had nine saves in goal.
Both teams had 31 ground balls on the day and Sewanee got 11 of 21 faceoffs. Guilford outshot Sewanee 44-34 and capitalized on two extra man opportunities. Each team was charged with seven penalties.
Sewanee is 0-5 and will face Greensboro on Saturday. Guilford is 2-4 so far in 2009.
