Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Freeman's hat trick leads Sewanee past Southwestern, 9-7

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Robert Freeman tallied a hat trick and an assist as Sewanee used a six-goal run to secure a 9-7 win against Southwestern in men's lacrosse action Friday night in Georgetown, Texas.

Freeman added eight ground balls to his performance, scoring three goals on five shots. Manoli Loupassi and Will Kennedy each recorded two goals, with Kennedy also adding an assist and four ground balls. Sage Cookerly contributed a goal and an assist, while Hudson Jones added a goal and a caused turnover.

Flynn Bowman made 13 saves and collected four ground balls in goal, while Tanner Furyk also added four ground balls. James Bogusky led the Tigers defensively with three caused turnovers.

Freeman opened the scoring for Sewanee, collecting a rebound off an initial shot from Loupassi and finishing in front of the cage. Kennedy extended the lead just over a minute later following a Southwestern turnover.

The Pirates responded quickly, however, as Matthew Houtz scored off the ensuing faceoff. Southwestern controlled possession again and tied the game with 10:22 remaining in the first quarter. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the period.

Southwestern opened the second quarter with two unanswered goals, including a man-up score, to take a two-goal lead with 8:55 left in the half. Henry Westfall caused a turnover that led to Freeman's second goal of the night, cutting the deficit to one.

Nischwitz then sparked the Tigers at the faceoff X, winning three consecutive draws. Following one of those wins, Hank Walsh found Loupassi open in front of the cage to tie the game. Cookerly gave Sewanee the lead shortly after, capping a three-goal response.

Neither team scored over the final 5:49 of the half, though Sewanee drew a late penalty to begin the third quarter with a man-up opportunity.

The Tigers were unable to capitalize on the extra-man chance out of halftime, but Kennedy broke an 11-minute scoring drought when JM DuPree found him open in front of the goal. Just over a minute later, Kennedy assisted on a goal by Jones to push the lead to three. Sewanee added another man-up goal when Cookerly found Freeman, who finished after faking out the goalkeeper, and extended Sewanee's run to six consecutive goals.

Southwestern opened the fourth quarter with two quick goals to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 13:06 remaining. The Tigers answered on another extra-man opportunity, as Freeman connected with Loupassi to restore a three-goal advantage.

Houtz scored his second goal of the game following a Sewanee turnover to make it a two-goal contest with 5:16 to play.

Late in the game, Bowman came up with a key save and secured the ground ball with 2:28 remaining to halt Southwestern's momentum. Sewanee used two timeouts in the closing minutes, and after a late shot was saved, the Pirates failed a clear, allowing the Tigers to run out the clock and secure the 9-7 victory.

With the win, Sewanee improves to 3-0 in SAA play. The Tigers will face Colorado College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Southwestern.
