Tigers dominate Hendrix 22-4 in SAA Conference play

SEWANEE, Tenn. – John Openshaw recorded a hat trick and an assist as Sewanee rolled past Hendrix, 22-4, in SAA men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon.

Openshaw notched his first career goal and assist while adding a ground ball and a caused turnover to his day. Hank Walsh and Harrison Fuller each scored three goals, while Aidan Feltman finished with two goals and an assist along with two ground balls.

Sewanee dominated at the faceoff X, with Max Bensing going a perfect 11-of-11 and Asa Nischwitz finishing 7-of-7. Bensing collected five ground balls, while Nischwitz added three. Benton Sullivan went 7-of-12 on faceoffs with four ground balls.

Defensively, Sam Ramberg and Hudson Jones each caused two turnovers. Ramberg added a goal and a ground ball, while Jones scooped up three ground balls. Will Mensh contributed on the defensive end with four ground balls and a caused turnover.

The Tigers controlled possession throughout, outshooting the Warriors 69-25, including a 40-10 advantage in shots on goal, while holding a commanding 61-15 edge in ground balls.

Sewanee struck quickly, as Nischwitz won the opening faceoff and Jones secured the ground ball before Will Kennedy found the back of the net on the Tigers' first shot. Kennedy later assisted on Walsh's goal to make it 2-0.

After a Hendrix failed clear, James Bogusky picked up a ground ball and Manoli Loupassi added another goal for Sewanee. The Warriors answered with 7:10 remaining in the first, but the Tigers responded with a flurry.

Following a save from Flynn Bowman, Fuller capitalized after a rebound opportunity to extend the lead. Jake Greene then scored twice in a 36-second span—first off a coast-to-coast play from Tyler Clary, and then on a feed from Griffin Peterson after another faceoff win.

Hendrix added a late goal in the first quarter, but Sewanee took full control in the second, scoring five unanswered. Walsh, Sage Cookerly, Asher Bowman, Colin Bennett, and Henry Westfall each found the back of the net as the Tigers built a commanding halftime lead.

Gus Albright opened the third quarter with a caused turnover and goal, and Sewanee added three more in a two-and-a-half-minute stretch. Walsh scored again, Openshaw connected with Fuller, and JM DuPree assisted Robert Freeman.

Hendrix scored midway through the third, but Openshaw answered late in the period. Feltman added his first career goal early in the fourth after collecting his own rebound.

Sewanee closed the game with five straight goals. Openshaw started the run, Feltman assisted Ramberg before adding another, and Bennett found Openshaw. DuPree capped the scoring with a man-up assist to Fuller with 1:40 remaining.

Sewanee heads on the road for another SAA matchup against Southwestern on Friday night before facing Colorado College in Georgetown, Texas on Sunday at 2 p.m.
