SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted national power Johns Hopkins University on the Mountain Sunday afternoon and the host Tigers fell 3-0 to the visiting team in the final match of the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational.
JHU struck early, gaining a 1-0 lead on a Scott Bukowski goal in just the third minute of the match. Bukowski would score another in the first, taking the total at the half to 2-0. Max Venkas scored Hopkins' third and final goal, securing the 3-0 tally.
Johnny Nalley (Gainsville, Ga.) started in goal for Sewanee and logged three saves. Hopkins outshot the Tigers 11-6, but committed 14 fouls compared to Sewanee's 11.
"This was a very strong tournament field. Both Hopkins and Ozarks were excellent opponents and presented different challenges for us. I was very pleased with the effort in both games. In both games, a two goal deficit came quickly in both halves but we continued to battle. (Sewanee took a goal back in Friday nights match, but could not get the equalizer).
Against good opponents you usually get punished for mistakes, unfortunately that was the case this weekend", remarked Sewanee coach
David Poggi.
The Tigers are 2-2 so far in 2008 and will host Maryville and Huntingdon on the Mountain next weekend.
