SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Huntingdon on Sunday for a rainy weekend match and took it to the Hawks with a 6-0 shutout. Sewanee led 2-0 at the half and then doubled its scoring in the second for the six-goal win.
Sewanee outshot Huntigdon 35-1 and took 13 corner kicks compared to two for the Hawks. The Tigers also only committed six fouls, while Huntingdon had 11. Goalie
Matt Hale (Ft. Worth, Texas) earned the shutout for Sewanee.
In the first,
Patrick Johnson (Cleveland, Tenn.) and
Jackson Gannaway (Collierville, Tenn.) provided Sewanee's goals. Johnson scored again in the second, along with two by
Matt O'Brien (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and a goal by newcomer Matt Ligthfoot (Germantown, Tenn.). Lightfoot also had two assists on the day.
"It's always nice to win, especially at home. However, it is more important to believe you can score often when you focus defensively. I was very pleased by how we rebounded from Friday and addressed some defensive concerns. This will be helpful next weekend, when we open league play against DePauw and Centre," said Coach
David Poggi.
Sewanee moves back to .500 with the win, taking their season total to 3-3. The Tigers will face DePauw and Centre next weekend to open SCAC play for 2008.
