Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sewanee finished up its weekend at the Birmingham-Southern Invitational on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Westminster (Mo.). The win takes the Tigers to 2-0 so far heading into next weekend's Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational on the Mountain.
Newcomer
Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn.) scored an unassisted goal in the first half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead that would hold for the rest of the match.
Johnny Nalley (Gainsville, Ga.) earned a shutout in the goal for Sewanee. The Tigers outshot Westminster 22-6, allowing only two Westminster shots in the second period.
Head coach
David Poggi was happy with the win. "It was great to open with a couple of wins, especially with such a young team," he said. "We created a lot of chances and worked hard to create them. It was very encouraging. Their keeper played well and kept them in the game. As we saw Friday night, anything can happen in a one-goal match. We got the win and I was very happy with the result."
Sewanee faces the University of the Ozarks and Johns Hopkins next weekend in the annual Rote tournament, which will be held Friday night and Sunday afternoon at Puett Field.
