Sewanee Men's Soccer: Rote Honored, #6 Emory Comes Out on Top

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sixth-Ranked Emory came to the Mountain and after scoring four unanswered goals in the first half, Sewanee held the Eagles scoreless in the second half for a 4-0 final tally in favor of Emory (13-0). Emory outshot Sewanee 12-8 on the day and committed 14 fouls compared to 12 for Sewanee. The Eagles were also given three yellow cards.

Erik Laney scored first blood for Emory just four minutes in and then a pair of Patrick Carver goals and a Ben Schlang goal secured the final 4-0 score. Sewanee senior goalkeeper Johnny Nalley (Gainesville, Ga., Gainesville)had two saves on the day.

"We started flat tonight - maybe it was the long layoff.  Against any team, that's a mistake, but against a team like Emory who is having the kind of year they are having, you can't expect to not suffer. In the second half we were at least equal to the challenge.  Alec's shot from 25yds out that hit the bottom of the cross bar and Brad's near post header were our best chances in the second half".

"We must now focus on our remaining SCAC matches".  Sewanee is currently in eighth place and with four games remaining are hoping to move up in the season standings (twelve teams compete in men's soccer in the SCAC).

At halftime, Sewanee alumnus Kyle Rote, Jr., '72 was honored on the occasion of Sewanee Homecoming and the dedication of the Kyle Rote, Jr. Field House at the Sewanee soccer/lacrosse complex. Rote kicked out an honorary game ball and was presented with several gifts, including a ball signed by the team.

After transferring to Sewanee his sophomore year, Rote played three seasons of soccer and had record breaking marks of: 17 goals in 1969, six assists in 1970, 47 career goals, 16 career assists and 110 career points. During his junior year, Rote took up the javelin and was the CAC champion his senior year and set the school record. He was also an NCAA national qualifier in the event and team captain in track as well as soccer. After his time on the Mountain, Rote was the Number one draft pick of the North American Soccer League in April 1972 by the Dallas Tornado. He was the 1973 NASL Rookie of the Year and the first American to lead the league in scoring. The former Sewanee head proctor also represented the US in national competition 15 times and was the first Tennessee player to be selected to a US national team. Kyle Rote, Jr. also was a three-time winner of ABC's Superstars Competition and has been elected to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame and was the 1980 Sewanee Alumnus of the Year.

Sewanee is now 4-9-1 and 1-5-1 in the SCAC. The Tigers will face Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes next weekend in road SCAC action.
