BOX SCORE
SAN ANTONIO – Sewanee was in Texas this weekend and fell 5-1 on Sunday to \#1 Trinity in San Antonio. Trinity led 3-0 at the half. "We approached this game (Trinity) with the same focus we have all of our opponents. We certainly could have chosen to play in a more defensive manner, but I am sure that would not have been new for them (Trinity hasn't lost at home since 2001, and has only lost one SCAC match since 2002)," said Sewanee coach
David Poggi
Sewanee and Trinity played a scoreless, defensive battle for nearly thirty minutes before the top-ranked Trinity Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of Tyrone Petrakis goals. They would add one more in the first, taking the halftime score to 3-0.
In the second half, Cameron Hogsett added some insurance for Trinity before Sewanee's
Jackson Gannaway (Collierville, Tenn., Collierville) gave the visiting Tigers some life with an 82nd minute goal from a
Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Germantown) assist. Kyle Porter scored one more for Trinity late, giving the hosts the final 5-1 tally.
In goal, Sewanee senior
Johnny Nalley (Gainesville, Ga., Gainesville) had six saves, while
Patrick Johnson had four saves for Trinity. Trinity outshot Sewanee 28-7 in the contest.
"Trinity is them best team in Division III year in and year out, so it is always a game that we look forward to playing in. They are the standard by which you can measure. Since we (the SCAC) do not have a post season conference tournament in soccer, its really the only chance for us to experience what post season play might be about. We need to continue to work hard and push ourselves. We have 5 important games remaining", said Poggi.
Overall, Sewanee is now 4-8-1 and is 1-5-1 in the SCAC. Trinity is perfect at 12-0 and 6-0 in the league.
