GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern got out to a 1-0 lead in SCAC men's soccer action Friday night against Sewanee in the first half, but the Tigers tied it up at 55:25 as Sewanee's
Matt Engle (Chambersburg, Penn., Mercersburg Academy) had a long throw-in into the Pirates penalty area.
Jackson Gannaway (Collierville, Tenn., Collierville) pounced on the bouncing ball and headed in the equalizer. It was Gannaways 3rd goal of the season. Southwestern took the 2-1 lead that would last in the 74th minute of play on a Morgan Knobel goal for the Pirates.
"Southwestern put a lot of pressure on us in that first half, but we weathered it and began to create some chances of our own," said Sewanee coach
David Poggi. " The near post corner they scored on towards the end of the half caught us a bit off guard. We adjusted in the second half and it paid off. The backline handled
Southwesterns attackers and our GK handled any chance they had. We began getting more numbers forward and as a result got a goal back. In the end both teams had a chance to win this game. Stu (Maxey), Jett (Fisher) and Engle all had chances. Southwestern is a good team. They work as hard as any team we've played and are very fast on the flanks and pressure every 50/50 ball. I think we are beginning to earn a reputation too," concluded Poggi.
Sewanee took 16 shots compared to 22 for the Pirates.
Matt Hale (Ft. Worth, Tex., All Saints) had eight saves for Sewanee, while Ryan Tasin had three for Southwestern.
Sewanee is 4-7-1 and is 1-4-1 in the SCAC. The Tigers will face Trinity on Sunday in Sa Antonio. Southwestern is 4-1 in the league and is 5-7 overall. The Pirates will host Oglethorpe on Sunday.
