Catapano cards six birdies, shoots three-under in third round

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Freshman Natalie Catapano collected six birdies en route to a three-under 69, moving up 30 spots individually, and senior Jane Stilz carded a four-over 76 for Sewanee on Thursday in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships on the Firecliff course at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif.
 
The Tigers remained 13th among the 15 teams that made the cut with a team score of 318. The Tigers head into Friday's final round just four strokes behind Randolph-Macon. All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at hole No. 10.
 
Catapano got off to a quick start with three birdies in the first six holes, with birdies on Nos. 11, 14 and 15. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native bogeyed 18 but added birdies on the first three holes on the front nine, getting to five-under at one point before bogeys on five and seven left her with a three-under 69, tied for 14th individually with a three-day total of 220. She tied for the second-best individual score of the tournament with her three-under 69.
 
Stilz played the back nine in one-over with six pars, two bogeys and a birdie at No. 15. The Lexington, Ky., native made par on the first four holes and recorded a birdie on hole five to get to even, but she bogeyed seven and nine and double bogeyed six as well, finishing at four-over 76 for a 54-hole score of 220, dropping just one spot in the individual standings.
 
Freshman Elizabeth Bowman double bogeyed her first hole and registered a bogey at No. 11 before netting a birdie on 12 and recording six straight pars to finish the back nine. The College Grove, Tenn., native also birdied No. 1 but had three doubles and two bogeys on the front, posting an 81 for a three-day total of 243, tied for 74th.
 
Freshman Rachel Waters bogeyed No. 10 but collected six consecutive pars before a double and a bogey to end the back nine. The Nashville, Tenn., native tallied four pars and four bogeys on the front, but she doubled No. 9, shooting an 82 for a 54-hole score of 237, tied for 68th.
 
Freshman Anna Claire Gibson registered seven pars with one bogey and one double on the back nine. The Knoxville, Tenn., native collected two doubles and one bogey on the front, finishing with an 82 for a three-day total of 243 as well.
