Jane Stilz tied her collegiate career-best with a one-under par 71 and freshman
Natalie Catapano shot 77 for Sewanee on Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships on the Firecliff course at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Tigers are tied for 14
th after posting a 307 team score in the opening round, just three strokes from the Top 10. All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at the first hole.
Stilz bogeyed the par-5 first hole but played flawlessly the remainder of the opening nine, recording five pars and posting birdies on holes three, five and eight. The Lexington, Ky., native registered eight pars and one bogey on the back for her one-under 71, tied for fifth, two shots behind the leader, Washington and Lee's Toral Bhatt.
Catapano opened her round with a birdie at No. 1 but then bogeyed five of the next eight holes on the front nine. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native made three more bogeys on the back but also birdied holes 14 and 18, carding a five-over 77, tied for 56
th but only three strokes from the Top 20.
Freshman
Rachel Waters started the day with a birdie at No. 1 and collected five pars and three bogeys on the rest of the front nine. The Nashville, Tenn., native added another birdie at No. 15 but also recorded three bogeys and a double bogey on the back for a six-over 78, tied for 68th.
Freshman
Anna Claire Gibson registered four bogeys and birdies on holes six and nine on the front nine. The Knoxville, Tenn., native collected five pars with four bogeys and a double on the back, shooting an 81, tied for 102nd.
Freshman
Elizabeth Bowman got off to a rough start with a triple bogey at No. 1 before recording four pars and three bogeys on the front nine. The College Grove, Tenn., native made just two pars on the back but registered her only birdie of the day at No. 15, finishing with an 86, tied for 140
th.
