Catapano holds individual lead, women's golf in first after day one at SAA Championships

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Freshman Natalie Catapano carded a two-under 70 for the first-round individual lead lead and Sewanee women's golf holds a seven-stroke advantage in the team standings as well after the opening round of the SAA Championships on Friday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.

The Tigers shot 298 as a team, seven shots better than Trinity University and 18 in front of Oglethorpe University in the 54-hole event.

All of the Sewanee golfers started their rounds at No. 1.

Catapano birdied three of the first seven holes – Nos. 2, 4 and 7 – but made a double bogey on the par-5 ninth hole to make the turn. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native collected eight pars with a birdie at No. 14 for her two-under 70, two strokes in front of Berry College's Amanda Milner.

Senior Jane Stilz bogeyed the first hole but then recorded four pars with a birdie at No. 5. She posted bogeys on seven and eight as well. The Lexington, Ky., native ran off six pars in seven holes starting at No. 9, with only a bogey at No. 14. She birdied the par-3 16th hole and finished with two pars for a two-over 74, tied for third.

Freshman Rachel Waters got off to a rough start with a double bogey at No. 1 before a birdie on two and then bogeys on three and four. She netted two more bogeys on the front nine. The Nashville, Tenn., native regained her form on the back nine with seven pars, a birdie at No. 12 and a bogey on 18 for a five-over 77, tied for ninth.

Freshman Elizabeth Bowman started slowly as well, recording a triple bogey at No. 1 before collecting six pars and two bogeys on the rest of the front nine. The College Grove, Tenn., native also kept making pars on the back, registering seven with a birdie at No. 14 and a bogey on 16 for another five-over 77.

Freshman Anna Claire Gibson followed the pattern of her fellow freshman with a rough stretch of holes to begin the round, including a double at No. 1 and bogeys on three and four, but she also birdied No. 2. The Knoxville, Tenn., native posted seven pars with a bogey on No. 11 and a birdie at 18 on the back nine, shooting five-over 77.

Junior Olivia Bentley bogeyed holes one and eight and recorded doubles on five and six before a birdie at No. 9. The Nashville, Tenn., native was much more consistent on the back with six pars, two bogeys and a birdie at No. 14 for a six-over 78, tied for 14th.
