Natalie Catapano carded a three-over par 74 while freshman
Rachel Waters shot 78 for Sewanee women's golf Saturday in the opening round of the Deb Jackson Invitational at West Pines Golf Club in Douglasville, Ga.
The Tigers, ranked 24
th by Clippd, stand seventh among 10 teams in the field, with five of the six teams in front of them ranked in the Top 16 nationally. Sewanee is just two strokes behind Mary Hardin-Baylor and UC Santa Cruz and eight shots in back of Wesleyan College [CT].
Catapano started her round on the 11
th hole, making a bogey, but then recorded six pars with a birdie on the par-4 14
th hole on the remainder of the back nine. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native collected seven pars with a bogey and one double bogey on the front nine and made a par on No. 10 to complete the round with a three-over 74 (par-71), tied for 13
th individually but only two strokes from the Top 5.
Waters, playing as an individual, shot four-over on the front nine after beginning at No. 1 with five pars and four bogeys. The Nashville, Tenn., native registered six pars and three bogeys on the back side for a seven-over 78, tied for 31
st but only three strokes from the Top 16.
Freshmen
Anna Claire Gibson and
Elizabeth Bowman as well as senior
Jane Stilz each shot eight-over par 79 on Saturday.
Gibson bogeyed No. 9 to start her round before netting six pars with two bogeys and a double on No. 18 on the back nine. The Knoxville, Tenn., native alternated bogeys and pars on the first five holes on the front side and ended with three straight pars for her eight-over 79, tied for 33
rd.
Bowman began her day at No. 7 with two bogeys in the first three holes but the College Grove, Tenn., native carded a three-over on the back nine with seven pars, one bogey and one double. She collected three pars and three bogeys over her final six holes for eight-over 79.
Stilz made a par on No. 10, her first hole, before three consecutive bogeys. The Lexington, Ky., native settled down and recorded four pars and one bogey over the last five holes on the back nine. She added six more pars on the front nine with two bogeys and one double for her eight-over 79.
Junior
Olivia Bentley shot 45 on the back nine with just three pars. The Nashville, Tenn., native posted a birdie at No. 5 and collected three more pars on the front side, shooting an 88 in the opening round.
