Bentley leads Tiger women with first-round 79 at Jekyll Island

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior Olivia Bentley posted a seven-over 79 while senior Jane Stilz and freshman Natalie Catapano each shot 80 for Sewanee women's golf Friday at the Jekyll Island Women's Intercollegiate in Jekyll Island, Ga.
 
All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at No. 1 on the Great Dunes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club, with Bentley posting a birdie at No. 2 before three straight bogeys on holes 5-7, making the turn at two-over. The Nashville, Tenn., native collected five pars with three bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine for her seven-over 79, tied for 40th individually.
 
Stilz recorded four pars and five bogeys on the front nine. The Lexington, Ky., native added four more pars on the back, including four in a six-hole stretch from 12-17, as well as her only birdie of the day at the par-4 16th hole, carding an eight-over 80, tied for 50th.
 
Catapano registered six pars and three bogeys on the front nine, starting the round with four pars in five holes. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native made four bogeys in a five-hole stretch to start the back nine but collected three pars and a bogey over the final four holes for her 80.
 
Freshman Anna Claire Gibson recorded three birdies on the front nine on holes two, four and eight but also four bogeys. The Knoxville, Tenn., native struggled on the back nine with one bogey, two doubles and a nine on the par-4 11th hole. She regrouped with a birdie at No. 14 and finished with an 83, tied for 81st.
 
Freshman Rachel Waters also started the day with two birdies on the front nine on holes two and eight, collecting four bogeys and a double on the first nine holes as well. The Nashville, Tenn., native made three pars, five bogeys and a quad on the back nine for an opening-round 85, tied for 94th.
 
Sewanee stands 14th among 24 teams in the field after the first round, only 10 strokes from the Top 10. The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday for the Tigers.
