Jane Stilz shot two-under par 71 while freshman
Anna Claire Gibson carded a three-over 76 for Sewanee women's golf Sunday at the Transylvania Kickoff Classic on the Big Blue Course at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
Stilz posted six birdies, three on each nine, in registering a two-under 71. The Lexington, Ky., native started the round at No. 1 with a bogey before a birdie at two and then another bogey on hole No. 3. She birdied Nos. 4-5 and collected four pars to make the turn. On the back nine Stilz recorded birdies on holes 11, 13 and 14 with bogeys at 12 and 18. She stands second individually, one stroke behind the leader, Piedmont University's Erin Donovan.
Gibson netted 14 pars with one birdie, two bogeys and one double bogey for her three-over 76. The Knoxville, Tenn., native posted a one-over 37 on the front nine with six pars, two bogeys and a birdie at No. 8. She registered eight pars on the back nine with only a double on the par-3 17
th hole and is tied for 12th.
Freshman
Natalie Catapano carded an opening-round 77 and after a rough start, shot even-par over the last 14 holes on Sunday. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native began the round with two bogeys and a double in the first four holes but then registered five pars to make the turn. She bogeyed No. 11 before her only birdie of the day at No. 12 and then posted six more pars. She stands tied for 16th.
Freshman
Rachel Waters recorded a first-round 80 on Sunday that included 10 pars. The Nashville, Tenn., native also started slowly with three bogeys in the first five holes but also a birdie on hole No. 2. She made four pars to make the turn and collected five more pars on the back nine with three bogeys and a double. She stands tied for 23rd.
Junior
Olivia Bentley shot one-over on the front nine with six pars, a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole and two bogeys. The Nashville, Tenn., native struggled on the back nine with two bogeys and three doubles, all on par-5's, finishing with a nine-over 82 in the opening round, tied for 28th.
Junior
Payton Burch netted a pair of birdies but only four pars in her round Sunday. The Elgin, S.C., native birdied No. 8 on the front nine and hole 13 on the back side, shooting 87 for the day, tied for 49th.
Sewanee posted a team score of 12-over, good for third place among 12 teams in the event and ahead of Piedmont, Oglethorpe University, Berry College and host Transylvania University.
