Catapano cards four-under 68, leads by two in Montgomery

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Freshman Natalie Catapano carded a four-under 68 and junior Olivia Bentley shot 77 for Sewanee women's golf on the first day of the Montgomery Intercollegiate at Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, Ala.
 
The Tigers are tied for third in the team standings with Washington and Lee, two strokes behind host Huntingdon College and four back of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
 
Catapano collected six pars with one bogey and birdies on holes four and six on the front nine. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native bogeyed holes 11 and 15 but birdied the three holes in-between – Nos. 12, 13 and 14 – on the back nine. She finished the round with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole for a four-under 68 and the first-round lead by two shots over Washington and Lee's Ella Wong.
 
Bentley recorded three bogeys and a birdie at No. 2 on the front nine. The Nashville, Tenn., native collected six more pars and three bogeys on the back, shooting five-over 77, tied for 10th.
 
Senior Jane Stilz registered two bogeys and a triple bogey in the first four holes but then played the final five holes on the front nine even with a birdie at No. 7 and one more bogey. The Lexington, Ky., native shot two-over on the back with three bogeys and a birdie at No. 12 for a seven-over 79, tied for 16th.
 
Freshman Anna Claire Gibson got off to a rough start with a triple bogey at No. 1 but then netted six pars with two bogeys on the rest of the front nine. The Knoxville, Tenn., native made her only birdie of the day at No. 12, adding three more pars on the back for an 82, tied for 26th.
 
Freshman Lila Weaver, playing as an individual and starting at hole 10, shot 43 on the front nine with just one par and a birdie at No. 7. The Saint Johns, Fla., native collected five pars on the back, finishing with an 84, tied for 37th.
 
Junior Payton Burch recorded four pars, a birdie at No. 3 and three bogeys on the front nine before a nine at No. 9. The Elgin, S.C., native netted four more pars with three bogeys and two doubles on the back nine for an 87, good for 44th.
 
The Tigers play the second and final round Monday.
