Fourth-quarter run sinks women's hoops

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – Shay Conn and Olivia Falvey each posted 13 points but Rhodes College scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, breaking open a close game and never looking back in a 67-50 victory over Sewanee in women's basketball action here Friday night at Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers trailed by six at the half but battled back to tie the game four times in the third quarter, but just like the second period, when Sewanee missed its first nine shots, the home team was unable to score in the final quarter until the 4:22 mark on a basket by Lilly Phillips.

Rhodes stretched the lead to 58-43 after the Phillips field goal, with a jumper by A'niya Lagarde and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Avery Marsh, who led all scorers with 16 points.

Kayla Antoine posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who shot just 24 percent from the field overall and 5-for-26 from 3-point range.

Conn made a 3-pointer on the opening possession to get the Tigers on the board and Antoine's layup knotted the game at five. A triple from the corner by Phillips pulled Sewanee within, 9-8, with 1:30 to go in the opening period, but baskets by Catherine Althoff and AC Milam pushed the Rhodes lead to 13-8 before a short jumper from Falvey made it 13-10 at the end of one.

The Tigers missed their first nine shots of the second quarter, but the Lynx added just six points to their advantage during that time. Antoine made 1-of-2 free throws at the 5:13 mark and Faith Humphrey's short jumper cut the deficit to 19-13.

Antoine scored again under the basket and Conn's driving layup made to 23-17 Rhodes at the half. Sewanee connected on just 3-of-17 from the field in the period, missing all eight attempts from behind the arc, but limited Rhodes to just 4-of-12 shooting and forced five turnovers.

Conn's 3-pointer early in the third quarter pulled Sewanee within one and the teams went back-and-forth before the Tigers put together an 11-4 run. Conn's old-fashioned 3-point play started the run and Humphrey made two foul shots before a triple from Brianna Keating-Rendon and then a fast-break layup by Falvey put Sewanee in front, 37-32, forcing a timeout by the Lynx.

Rhodes answered with an 11-2 spurt to take the lead for good, with a 3-point play by Giana Vlahakos and two free throws from Milam preceding a putback for Althoff. Rhodes led 45-41 heading to the fourth quarter.

Sewanee ends a four-game homestand Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Hendrix College.
