NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - Scheduled to tee off at 7:25 a.m. CT, sophomore golfer
Pearse Lucas had to wait nearly three hours to get his tournament run started at the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. Once he got started, and following another delay halfway through, Lucas finished the opening round with a one over par, 73, six strokes behind the co-leaders.
Over the course of the day, Lucas chipped in three birdies and made 11 pars.
Starting on hole 18, Lucas had to bogey the par 4 but would bounce back to even par on the second hole, a par 5.
Later on the front nine, right as the rains came down, the sophomore made back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. On the ninth, a par 4, with only 275 yards to work with, he only used three strokes to get the ball in the bottom of the cup.
Moving back to the back nine following a lightning delay, Lucas ran into some trouble with bogeys on holes 11 and 13. However, he bounced back with four straight pars to wrap up the day.
Day two of the championships occur on Wednesday from the Champion Trace course. Lucas is scheduled to start on hole 15 at 10 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. CT as a part of a shotgun start.
