Olivia Falvey scored 19 points and
Cydney Wright added 17, but No. 18/22 Whitman College used an 18-2 run to start the fourth quarter, pulling away in an 88-57 win against Sewanee in women's basketball action here Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
Whitman (8-1) led 57-46 at the end of three quarters but opened the final stanza with an 18-2 run over five minutes, running away from the Tigers in the process.
Emmie Ogden had a layup on an inbounds pass and Avery Neal made a 3-pointer for the Blues on the next trip before a Briana Andrade layup. Carly Martin's fastbreak basket upped the Whitman advantage to 66-46 and Neal added another three.
Shay Conn's driving basket finally got the Tigers on the board in the period, but triples by Neal and Carly Martin forced the second timeout of the quarter by Sewanee with the Blues leading, 75-48. The Tigers committed six turnovers and made 1-of-4 shots in the first five minutes of the quarter while Whitman was 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc.
Falvey got the Tigers on the board with a reverse layup a little over two minutes into the first period and a basket by
Kayla Antoine made it 7-4 for the Blues, but Sewanee struggled from the field the rest of the quarter, making just 3-of-15 total with a host of missed layups.
Falvey's two free throws kept the deficit at six but a layup from Christiane Carlisle and a 3-pointer by Neal pushed the Whitman lead to 11. Wright's layup in the final minute made it 17-8 at the end of 10 minutes.
Wright added another basket to open the second quarter but three straight baskets by the Blues, two of them from Lindsay Drango, pushed the Whitman advantage to 13.
Lilly Phillips swished a three from the corner for the Tigers but consecutive triples by Carlisle extended the Blues lead to 33-17 midway through the period.
Phillips answered with another trifecta and Wright's layup cut the deficit to 11, but Holly Morgan made another three for Whitman. Falvey and Wright each connected on a pair of free throws and a run-out layup from
Brianna Keating-Rendon made it a 10-point game at the half, with the visitors leading 38-28.
Wright paced the Tigers with 10 points and Falvey added eight, but Sewanee made just 9-of-28 from the field while the Blues connected on 16-of-36 shots overall with five 3-pointers.
Sewanee kept the deficit between nine and 13 points in the third quarter thanks to a 3-pointer by Wright and another from Falvey as well as field goals by Falvey and Conn. Layups by
Faith Humphrey and Antoine made it a nine-point game again and the Tigers headed to the final quarter trailing by 11.
Sewanee travels to No. 16/12 Emory on Dec. 31 and Asbury on Jan. 2 before resuming conference action Jan. 5 at Millsaps.
