Cydney Wright posted a career-best 20 points and sophomore
Olivia Falvey added 14 and Sewanee held off a second-half rally by Bob Jones University in a 66-62 victory in women's basketball action here Friday at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (2-7) ended a four-game losing streak with the win, hanging on in the fourth quarter after holding a 20-point lead late in the first half. The Bruins posted a 13-4 run in the third quarter but Sewanee continued to lead by 12 heading to the final period.
Bob Jones continued the comeback in the fourth period, with Annie Miller's layup and 3-pointer as well as two field goals from Katarina Tabora. Shea Dickinson's triple from the corner cut the Tigers lead to two with 5:45 remaining, but Falvey answered on the other end with a layup and the foul on a nice backdoor cut pass from Antoine down the baseline, pushing the lead back to five.
Wright posted a layup for the Tigers but missed another chance underneath and Dickinson made two at the foul line for the Bruins for a 63-59 contest with 1:18 remaining. Sewanee committed a turnover and Dickinson converted a layup on the other end with 55.7 seconds left.
Falvey's shot missed for the Tigers but Bob Jones was unable to tie or take the lead, with a 3-pointer by Caitlyn Dickerson rattling in-and-out.
Faith Humphrey made 1-of-2 for Sewanee with 21.0 seconds left and after a timeout and then a foul, Miller connected on 1-of-2 for the Bruins for a two-point game again with 11.3 ticks to play.
Lilly Phillips made both free throws with 9.5 seconds remaining, pushing the lead to four, and Miller's runner in the lane was no good on the other end with the Bruins unable to get another shot off.
Humphrey added 10 rebounds to go with six points and three assists and Falvey finished with eight boards, six on the offensive glass.
Dickinson led the Bruins with 15 points while Anna Layne Wylder and Miller each netted 11 and Bria Dickinson added 10.
The Tigers started the game with an 11-3 spurt highlighted by three baskets from
Kayla Antoine and a 3-pointer by Phillips. The home team stretched the lead to 10 with back-to-back field goals from Wright and led 18-9 after one period.
Falvey had a putback to open the second quarter and consecutive layups from Wright, the second one a steal and coast-to-coast basket on the other end, made it 24-12 three minutes into the period. Wright added another field goal and two free throws by Falvey extended the lead to 33-18.
Falvey continued to attack the basket, getting an old-fashioned 3-point play and another layup late in the quarter, but a field goal in the lane from Hallie Ritter and then a 3-pointer by Layne Wylder cut the Sewanee lead to 38-23 at intermission.
Wright netted 14 points in the half on 6-of-7 shooting and Falvey added nine points. The Tigers limited Bob Jones to just 9-of-27 shooting from the field.
Bria Dickinson netted nine points in a 13-4 run by the Bruins in the third quarter, starting with baskets by Dickinson and Layne Wylder and two foul shots by Dickinson, who then hit a 3-pointer and another layup, pulling the visitors within 48-35.
Shea Dickinson's field goal and 3-pointer made it a 10-point game late in the period, but
Brianna Keating-Rendon picked up a rebound and made a reverse layup for a 54-42 Sewanee advantage after three quarters.
Sewanee hosts Whitman College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the team's final game before Christmas.
